“Play is a child’ work, and this is not a trivial pursuit” – Alfred Adler

Allowing your child to participate in extracurricular activities is a wise choice as most of these are an extension of what they learn in classrooms. We have a ton of activities to offer at St. Michael’s School such as street plays, music and dance, arts and craft, painting, yoga and sports. Our students are engaged in exhibitions, intra and inter school competitions as well as celebration of all important days in the calendar. Some highlights of the year 2016-17 are:

Bala Janaagraha Civic Project – Students have made it to the national level after an intense competition at the district and zonal level conducted by Bala Janaagraha. Our team of 10 students will present their ideas and steps to improve the roads of Ranchi in the competition scheduled on February 11, 2017 in Bengaluru. Students did an intense survey and met the state governor and a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan official to discuss ideas of road improvement and how to make Ranchi a better city. They took out rallies with banners and posters and held nukkad natak to create awareness among the public. They also distributed both bio and non biodegradable dustbins to street vendors. They also gave paper bags to shopkeepers to reduce dependency on polybags. The team will showcase their efforts at the National Level competition scheduled on February 11, 2017 in Bengaluru.

IT Talent Search was conducted by the state department of IT and e-government government in Jharkhand to identify computer wizards. Out of 113 students who participated from our school, 4 entered the second level. It boosted the morale of the students and encouraged them to participate in more such competitions.

Other competitions include DOX (Doranda Old Xaverians) Inter school events on dance, jam sessions, poetry and recitation. Ramkrishna Mission events and Jharkhand State Inter School Declamation competition come next.

Celebrations

Besides the celebration of all important days in the calendar such as Independence Day, Teachers Day, Children’s Day, republic Day, students also participated in National voters’ day. During this, they made the symbols of different political parties and created placards for raising awareness about voting rights.

Youth Skill Day was held with a lot of splendor on August 13, 2016. The symbol of the exhibition was ‘Charkha’ which signifies the continuous growth and contribution of human beings. An exhibition held on the same included ‘Best out of Waste’ models in which students highlighted the power of creativity and recycling materials. There were also fashion trends showcasing dresses out of plastics and paper plates. Various schemes envisioned by our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding youth development were also a part of the celebration. Students showcased the unique culture and heritage of India through bottle art. They made a lotus out of plastic spoons depicting the three colours of our national flag. Sand art by our art teacher was a hit.

National Journalism Day was held for the second time in our school. Children made different equipments such as mike, flash and camera out of waste materials. They also made a newspaper with various articles on politics (Boggling and Joggling Minds), entertainment (Mumbai Calling), tragic events (Triggering Emotions), Local news (Ranchi Heights), health (Fit is Hit), business (Money in Money Out), International news (Around the World) and Sports (Fits in).

Bulletin Boards are an integral part of the classroom activities, in which they are groomed to think out of the box and come up with unique ideas. Our students have a great sense of colour combinations and are able to portray any theme they pick in the best possible way. This monthly activity keeps them updated with the events taking place in our society and pushes them to come up with solutions. We believe this helps them to stand out in a crowd.

Other activities held on a daily basis within classrooms include comic book making, posters and collages and other craft, painting, sculpturing and puppetry. These exercises have trained the students to create objects out of any material, thereby making them experts at hands-on activities.

Vibgyor (annual function) and our Annual Sports Day are the two most eagerly-awaited events in our school year.

Annual Sports Day

Nostalgia, our annual farewell, is celebrated with much pomp and splendor. Students of Class IX throw a farewell ceremony to the passing out batch of class X.
